Artisan meads — French meaderies
French artisan mead is experiencing a fascinating revival. This ancestral honey-based fermented drink — one of the oldest in the world — is today being produced by a new generation of independent beekeeper-meadmakers who reinterpret traditional recipes using terroir honeys and modern fermentation techniques. On Spiravel, you buy your mead directly from these artisans. The range is far broader than the archetypal image suggests: from dry, light meads barely stronger than a white wine, to fortified and barrel-aged versions closer to a spirit, through fruit meads infused with fresh or dried fruits, and botanical meads made with herbs, spices or hops. Each meadery develops its own recipes based on the honey of its region. The link between beekeeping and mead production is fundamental: the best producers control the entire chain, from hives to bottles. The choice of honey — acacia, chestnut, heather, linden, wildflower — determines the aromatic profile of the finished mead. A chestnut honey from Corsica will produce a very different mead from Provencal lavender honey. Buying direct from the meadery gives access to limited-run cuvees and seasonal productions that conventional channels never carry.
